Algeria has a 1-5-4-3 formal education structure. There is one year of pre-primary school, which has an official entry age of five and is referred to as éducation préparatoire. Primary school, which is known as enseignement primaire, has an official entry age of six and a duration of five grades. Secondary school is divided into two cycles: lower secondary and upper secondary.
Lower secondary, which is known as enseignement moyen, consists of grades 6-9 and culminates in the brevet d`étude moyen; upper secondary, which is known as enseignement secondaire général et technologique, consists of grades 10-12 and culminates in Baccalauréat de l`enseignement secondaire. In addition, Algeria has three lower secondary vocational education tracks that last between one and two years, and one upper secondary vocational education track that lasts two years (ISCED 2011 mapping for 2014 school year).
